@Omberone there are 4 dimensions in the world as perceived by the human brain. Length, Width, Depth and time. In reality there are only 3 dimensions Length, Width and Time

@QCThemountain The story varies from game to game; the games are not sequels to each other.

However, a few recurring elements: You (the protagonist) are a member of (or are drawn into) some underground terrorist organization to fight against an evil empire of some description. Often, the games take traditional religious imagery and after playing it straight for a while, completely invert it. Dualisms are common (tech vs nature, human vs non, light vs dark, etc.)
