You are seeing the term as it used by people to describe fans. The idea existed, but the term was coined back when the fandom was early. I highly suggest you look up the definition. Your idea is only half-right and you are thinking it only applies to a real person. It's a fandom created term to begin with
"Furry" was used to describe those characters FIRST. Then it was used for the fans.You are seeing it from your point looking back from someone more familiar with others using it

No, the term started to refer to the characters, then was applied to the fans, also. It applied to both of them.

@Draknfyre Yes, the characters themselves are anthropomorphic animals, but the term "furry" is referring more to the person behind the character and the community. I mean, would you consider characters like Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, or Brian Griffin to be furries?

You should look up the definition of it. "Anthropomorphic animal" is the original definition of furry. The use of it as applied as you described it are the same thing.
