"we're not nessecarily ironic"

I like the sloppy and bored (or maybe slightly frustrated sounding) solos. That's one reason I listen to Pavement, and just bought Wowee Zowee. I dig good tube style atonalism. I think the unpredictability of his off-kilter, or angular solos and his sing-speak vocals are what makes him great to me, much like the velvet underground, which were like a perfect blend of velvety pop and wiry avant garde at once, and able to freely shift between the two.

he's handsome and weird
Totally agree. His guitar playing was always exceptional, except when he was all high (he'd get a little sloppy...and bored it seemed).
But in Real Emotional Trash, he is absolutely brilliant. I always believed his strength was his songwriting ability, but his playing doesn't get enough credit.
He is truly a legend in my eyes too, and I hope his contributions get more recognized. As i tell all my friends, just listen to Pavement and the Jicks a few times and let it sink in. Such range too. A+

The man is a legend in my eyes. I actually play his solo albums and with the Jicks more now a days than I do Pavement albums. The me at 17 would say that I am insane but they are that good. Saw him this past summer and his guitar playing has gotten amazingly good.
