This is not 100% right because even thought I speak, write and understand spanish some of the words where hard and the lyrics I found on google most of them where wrong. SORRY IT DOES NOT HAVE THE ACCENTS.I think this song was created long time ago in old spanish style.
No les aseguro que la letra sea 100% correcta porque no se entendia mucho no nomas a David si no alos demas artistas que escuche que tambien la cantan no se les entendia mucho. Perdon que no les puse los accentos en las palabras.

Riu, riu, chiu (nightingale's sounds)

Riu, riu, chiu was written in so-called villancico style, which became a popular form for songs in post-Renaissance Spain. Such songs are in ternary form, with a text expressing some aspect of Christian principles or beliefs. This carol became one of the more widely known such works in its time; versions of it today often contain updated translations to filter out its archaic words and meanings. The author of this carol is generally thought to be anonymous, but its text, possibly originally written in Portuguese, has been attributed by some to Mateo Flecha (1481-1553). The melody to Riu, riu, chiu probably dates to the fifteenth century or earlier. The words in the title are vocalizations of the sounds made by a nightingale. The main theme is lively and rhythmic and has an instant appeal, lingering in the mind long after one or two hearings. It exudes folk-ish color, but without conveying the more exotic kind of Spanish national character that would evolve in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. One hears a mixture of Renaissance-era elegance here with a sort of peasant-like festivity. Its text speaks of the roles of the Blessed Mother and the Redeemer. ~ All Music Guide

  • I much prefer Kalenda Maya's recording of this song (which you can find here at YouTube too). Not only does she preserve the original tune and more of the likely original feel of the song, but the rhythm is very infectious. I don't think Archuleta enhanced the song at all by trying so hard to "make it his own."

  • @ninahcampos You're right. The "lamb" they're saying God is protecting from the wolf is the Virgin Mary.

  • @jabbafan9600 Just roll your mouse and see the translation below... someone asked before and I put there.

  • @WildeNotesMusic It´s "nuestra cordera", not "nuestro cordero". It´s feminine, not masculine, and they are talking about the Virgin Mary here. They say in the sequence:

El lobo rabioso la quiso morder/ The rabid wolf wanted to (tried to) bite her

Mas Dios poderoso la supo defender/ But God almighty knew how to protect her.

Later in the song they start to talk about Jesus and they also call Him lamb, but not here. Here they are talking about Mary.

  • i love this song!!!! i love you david!!!

  • Insert Mexican food here. It's all good.

  • It's Castillian... argh.

  • This song is in medieval Spanish so yeah it's hard to find the true lyrics.

  • Much better version of this song, done by Kalenda Maya, can be found here at YT. That's how the song should sound.

  • @TanreiChan I agree. David has a good voice, but I don't like the way he arranged & "popified" this classic song, mispronounced "guardo," added "show-off vocal runs," changed the tune in too many places, etc. It's a wonderful song in its original form. If you want to hear a really good version done by a pop group, check out The Monkees' recording.
