This 3D medical animation shows the placement of an endoscope in the large colon (bowel) during a colonoscopy procedure to screen for polyps and colorectal cancer. During a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy, a biopsy is sometimes preformed to distinguish between benign and cancerous tissue. If polyps are found during the colonoscopy a polypectomy is generally performed. See more 3D medical animations from Nucleus Medical Art at http://www.nucleusinc.com/youtube ANCE00175

  • I had this procedure done in 2007 and was found to have colon cancer. I wish I had done it earlier when my doctor first suggested it. At that time it would have entailed removing a polyp instead of removal of about a quarter of my colon and resection it together again. The good news is I am cancer free two and a half years later.

  • @twarren8178 lights out. i'd hate to be awake and feel a tube up my ass and intestines.

  • I had my first one two weeks ago. (I am 17) Found out that I have Crohns disease. The worst part is the prep by far, all you remember is a little bit before you go to sleep and then you wake up.

  • The prep. is far worse than the procedure itself, but don't put it off. I had a polyps the size of a golf ball snipped. Yeah it can be a bit uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as something developing into cancer ;) If you need one - just do it!

  • and by the way, my doctor told me it can be done without sedative. but i'm so stressed right now how it would feel without getting one... and i worry a lot about getting sedated about memory loss or not being able to wake up anymore. =(

  • does this procedure hurt or feel uncomfortable in any way?? i might undergo sigmoidoscopy in a couple of days, but hopefully not. i have blood in my feces and having a hard time defecating. i underwent a rectal exam yesterday, there was a part that hurt but the doctor but found no blood. he said it will depend on my CBC and Fecalysis results if we're pushing through sigmoidoscopy.

i just feel nervous about this procedure. ='(

  • @shaffer8794, Praise God, no cancer & U R still here with us all, on earth.

  • I have just been for this procedure and the worst thing about it was drinking the mixture the night before and the morning after i would have prefferred the enema was just a bit uncomfortable like wind pains deep breaths through the pains and its gone but other than that nothing to be afraid of honestly if you do take the drink be careful you might still have the runs for a day or two better the test than the other option

  • @htownallday281 The doctor probably slipped in a rufie in that medicine XD

  • I had this procedure many yrs ago...my "specialist" was a quack. I recieved NO sedation or pain relief...i had no idea. this was at the henderson hospital in hamilton ontario. I wish i could remember the drs name b/c i am now scarred for life. I will NEVER have this done again.

  • That's weird that most of you are saying they didn't put you out for this -- and that some of you didn't even use a sedative at all! I was worried going in today to get an endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy because of some of the comments on this page, however, they kept telling me not to worry that they're giving me "the good stuff" and it'll put me out. They ended up giving me propofol, the doctor told me to take a few deep breaths, and by the 3rd breath I was completely out.
