This video is part of my "How to draw landscapes series"

This video will show you how I like to draw mountains. The basic shape of a mountain is a triangle. You take that initial shape and morph it into a mountain by building off it.
This process starts by taking that triangle shape and replace the lines with more organic lines. This means to create curved, jagged....anything but straight direct lines.
Then from that you can start to create peaks branching off from the triangular shape to create a more interesting mountain. Then when the first mountain is created, create a few more.

After that, you create an organic/irregular line from the peak of the mountain all the way down to the base. That line will help to determine where the light and shadow will be.

Then you need to establish where your light is coming from. This is essential for the drawing to have a real life look to it.

After this comes the shading. Where you determined the light source to be is how you will shade the mountains. The side of the mountain facing the light will be lighter than the side facing away from the light source.

  • hey Tyler.what kind of paper is that and where do you get it......

  • @marco82362 Oh, this was done in my hard bound sketch book. I wouldn't recommend getting the one that I am using in this video. Normally, hard bound sketch books have very thin sketch paper in them. I would recommend 2 things. 1: Any (drawing) quality paper will work out just fine. The second is a hard bound drawing sketch book. They are a bit harder to find. Drawing paper can be found at any local craft store.

  • Your tutorials really help!!! You inspire me and if it wasn't for you I probably wouldn't be an artist. Also I have a question. All I have ever done is draw mountains and I want to draw plains and other landscapes but I am confused as where to start. Do you have any tips?

  • @TheParanormalInc 9 times out of 10, I start the landscape with just a horizon line outlining the mountains/ hills. Then I spend the time to fill in the sky. After the sky is done, I work my way down the page. The mountains/ hills are next, then a lake or just a field of grass, then ill draw some foreground trees, bushes. Work from the top of the page to the bottom or the furthest objects to the closest.

  • wow that looks great and your tutorials really help :)

    and i have 2 questions:

1.) is it easier to draw this mountains with a mechanical penic than with a normal one.. or was the mechanical just the first pencil you found to draw with ^^

2.) can you explain the different shading techniques and tell us where (at which parts of drawings) to use them?

looking forward to more of your awesome tutorials :)

  • @Champo0 1.) I prefer to use mechanical pencil because of the grip on it. Also you can add much more detail and never have to sharpen them. I also do use regular pencils.

2.)well, in the video I kinda show what im doing by pointing out the light source and explaining where the shading would be on the mountains. Ill most likely make another tutorial on mountains since this video is getting pretty high view amounts.
