They were produced to escape hawks during Mid Evil times, when they took messages. Then bred for show competition. Makes sense to me.

@curlymike You might be surprised how many different types of pigeons there are. But actually every single fancy or racing pigeon is just a variation of the rock dove, the common street pigeon. Personally I don't race mine, I stick with the fancies, and breeding them to get variations is a lot of fun because you can go through generations faster thus getting faster results. Raising pigeons is a lost art, unfortunately, being kept alive by only a few fanciers.

@FatherLawrence Actually rollers are an exploitation of a genetic mutation - certain pigeons had neuropathic defects which caused them to start flipping backwards in the air, thus "rolling" down, & some breeders liked that & bred the defect into a desirable trait! There are also tumblers & even "ground tumblers" that can't even get into flight - they just jump & do backward flips on the ground. Hope this info helps a bit :)

@curlymike I gotta add, these are the coolest pigeons I've ever seen, not like those dirty crap eating bastards we have around here. The only amusement ours have is to sit on a wire across the road and poop down on people, I'm not joking, they almost got me once!

OMGfacts though
No one really knows why they do it. They seem to do it more, and as a group staying closer together, when they sense a state of security. But I have seen them do at any old time what so ever. Just ... YEP! another. another. another. another. Kind of like the Volkswagen commercial.
