"Helplessly Hoping" is the 8th track off of their debut self titled album, "Crosby, Stills & Nash" from 1969. This song is one of my favorites by CSN and the harmonies on this are particularly good. Just sit back, listen and enjoy a truly beautiful song

Lyrics:

Helplessly hoping
Her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses
Of gentle true spirit
He runs, wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of good-bye

Wordlessly watching
He waits by the window
And wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams
He worries
Did he hear a good-bye? Or even hello?

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other

Stand by the stairway
You'll see something
Certain to tell you confusion has its cost
Love isn't lying
It's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other

  • I think the last line of the chorus is just "they are for each other," not "four for."

  • @hieronymus9 You're right. Made a mistake with the lyrics

  • @Princeboy99 I thought it was "they are four, each other"

  • @nowherebandens I looked up the lyrics just now and it's spelled "for" because you would never say two people are meant "four each other." Even though it goes along with the pattern that they are using throughout the chorus

  • Great audio and a nice photo montage. Thanks for posting. Happy Birthday, Graham Nash !!

  • Some of you folks need to quit it with the trips and the trips to restroom. A very fine song and you won't hear alliteration done much better anywhere else.

  • My wedding song..someday..after 15 years of marriage with my love

  • Hey, HackNSlasHz, you are absolutely right.....did just that in the 70's with this entire double album.....the m&m's talked and at restaurants the food looked like people's faces and talked back too....laugh, laugh, laugh...most excellent memories!

  • Fartlessly plopping is the 12" remix of this song. Its about when Fatty Crosby drank 13 pints of Guiness and had an accident in his shorts.
