January Interim: Globalization & Sustainable Development: Nicaragua
Students explored how the lives of Nicaraguans have been affected by globalization, and how communities are creating self-sufficiency and sustainability. Lafayette students had the opportunity to meet with many people from different sectors of society, including workers, farmers, cooperative leaders, health care workers, scholars and activists. They learned about the current economic crisis and the impact of free trade agreements, privatization, and IMF-imposed structural adjustments. In addition they experienced rural alternative development projects while on a home stay, and visited urban development projects sponsored by the Center for Development in Central America in Managua.
