Devdas (Dilip Kumar) is leaving Chandramukhi (Vijayantimala), and is embarking on a last aimless journey of his life. The dialogue exchange between the two is really touching, and lot more is expressed that just the words. In their hearts both of them know that they will probably never meet again, and yet, an unsaid hope is that they might. Just close to the end of this exchange, this song starts to plays in the background, and continues as Devdas walks down the steps and rides away in a tonga, while Chandramukhi sees from her balcony, having a last gaze at the one she loves, never to see or meet again.

The essence of this scene is a very soft sadness and a resignation to the wiles of fate, and this song captures it so well, playing the background, and in the minds of Chandramukhi and Devdas.

The song is so beautifully crafted in words, in composition and in the voice; and so approprately expresses the unsaid between the two lovers, that this is probably their last meeting. . . . "wo na aayenge palat kar. . . ".
