Shelene Bryan explores the borders of Status Quo. How becoming uncomfortable can be a start to new innovations. Her message: Don't worry that you might fail. Worry that you might succeed at something that doesn't matter.

The lens through which Shelene Bryan sees the world changed dramatically after she decided to travel to Africa to see if the children she and her family were sponsoring were for real. After that trip to Africa, Shelene gave up her Hollywood career and started Skip1.org. . Shelene believes Skip1.org is not about one person making a big donation. It's about lots of people making small ones, something they can easily skip, and help change the world instead.

About TEDx.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos -- or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos -- sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.

  • "I am not concerned that anyone in this room is gonna fail at anything [...] My concern is that you're gonna succeed at something that didn't matter."

    *speechless*

  • As one who has been on 2 short-term mission trips, I can tell any skeptic that money is not all that helps these folks in need. Our physical presence and encouragement means the world to the people that we also send money to on a regular basis. They absolutely need HER.

  • I love this woman.

  • Great message and admirable sentiment, but all I could think about was how much the money she's spending on airline tickets so SHE can have an experience would help the kids and communities she's experiencing. They don't need HER there, they need her MONEY there. She's doing a good thing, but she could do more by writing a bigger check.

  • Terrific video. Thank you for posting.

  • ROCKIN'! Thank you for being uncomfortable.

  • One of my favorite talks of that day! AMAZING! Thank you for sharing your story!

  • WOW.... one person CAN make a difference.... THANK YOU...
