Everybody is excited now about the product launch of the iPad but I guess it's time to put it away and take a look at iPhone support in the upcoming release of Ubuntu (10.04, Lucid Lynx).

The first few minutes are containing footage from a fresh install. After that I compiled the latest version (1.0.0) of libimobiledevice what makes it all possible whit some other software.

I suggest you to watch the video in HD.

For Ubuntu head to: http://www.ubuntu.com

If you're looking for more information or building instructions:

The music: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Elektronova/

PS: My iPhone is not jailbroken since there is no option for that with 3.1.3 firmware.

  • @tehandroidmaster Sorry for the late reply, but I'm still having the same problem in Ubuntu. Photos are no problem at all, but music-syncing is impossable, so I'm forced to using Ubuntu One-streaming or Spotify if I really want to use iPhone and Ubuntu. It's alright, but it could be better.

  • im using mint ten at the moment and cannot get my iphone to work or charge.

  • Getting following error: ----------------------------------------- No package 'libusbmuxd' found Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables libusbmuxd_CFLAGS and libusbmuxd_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. ------------------------------------- $ locate libusbmuxd /usr/lib/libusbmuxd.so.1 /usr/lib/libusbmuxd.so.1.0.7 How do i adjust path on ubuntu 11.04?
  • @muh1h1 libimobiledevice is a great thing, however sometimes it's not enough.

For my 4th generation iPod touch, I had to update the library from 1.0.4 to 1.1.1, jailbreak, and change the dbversion from 5 to 4.

Before that, it still shows up as a filesystem and on Banshee and Rhythmbox, but it wouldn't sync. Just saying, even though it supports iPhones out of the box, it doesn't always work.

  • what about iOS5? i can't mount my iPod touch 4g :(

  • @DarthSalva Actually it does, I guess it depends on your exact firmware/device revision.

  • Will this work on Ubuntu 11.04? Or other debian/GNU based distros? Im using natty right now for day to day use but im always trying new distros out. If I can get it to work in 11.04 I'd be happy though. Oh, and im jailbroken too, but I think safe mode fools most things like this

  • is there any way to use this in conjunction with testdisk to recover deleted files on the iphone? i had to restore my os from a backup and lost all the photos/videos i had taken since the last time :c

  • powerful! yet tedious...
