Inspired by Caitlin Meissner's poem Questions for Yusef (It's on Youtube search for it. It's brilliant). I've been trying to write a poem for Lauryn Hill since 2002. I realized that I was angry at her for leaving which is harsh. I've never met her. Just felt like I knew her. She shaped much of my late teens and early 20s. I related to her in ways that I couldn't any other female entertainer at the time. She spoke to me and for me. I wanted to honor her not chastise her for taking care of herself. So this is the poem for her.
i feel this too deeply. questions i've wondered. "how many millions singing your songs as lullaby keep you awake?"
word we can't help she has to help herself. can she help herself? sigh.

This broke me to tiny pieces! All the hurt i felt when Lauryn decided to go into seclusion. She is one of the very few artists I truly look up to, and will always thank for showing me the light, guiding me when I got lost, and allowing me to find truth within myself. This is beautiful!

Respect for this one. I'm curious what Lauryn's response would be if she saw/heard this poem...?
