Gameplay from Crazy Kong (a Donkey Kong clone) playing on the Sinclair ZX81. Retro Gaming.

Just for those who are unfamiliar with this machine... a ZX81 is not a Spectrum. Sinclair made several computers, and the Spectrum was just one of them.

This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability.
It's more a case of me speaking my thoughts while playing the games, many for the first time, and most for the first time in a very long time... so it's all a little spontaneous and random.
Predictably, as I never practice before recording, I usually play very badly.

Given that I am playing many of these games for the first time, and everything I say is completely off the cuff, you probably shouldn't take what I say overly seriously. The opinions that I express are my feelings at the time, but it's entirely possible that they would be different if I were to take the time to get to grips with the game.

However, given that these videos are intended to show that "first time experience", I believe they have some validity or merit.

  • 2 videos?

  • @DdlyHeadshot Different game.

  • Superb. I like how it scrolls up. I'll have to get this game to play on the emulator on my DS. I can set the controls to the keys.

  • @wisteela It'll be a lot easier to play on an emulator too... no grappling with awkward keys on a membrane keyboard :)

  • I liked the ZX81. A good machine for learning BASIC on. Writing games, however, required you to learn machine code, if the games in question were those that required any, 'action', or quick reflexes. 16K was a must.

  • At first I thought this was written in BASIC but once you LISTed the program it looked like it was a mixture of BASIC and Machine Code. I am actually really impressed to see a Donkey Kong clone running on a ZX81, amazing what programmers could squeeze out of this back in the day. Shame about the keys though, a re-define would have been in order.

  • Nice gameplay....looks intresting, have to try this on an emulator. :)

  • I was wrong, it's an NEC z80 clone, running slightly slower at 3.25mhz...

  • Still not the worst DK, ORIC version has to be worse than this

  • @SteveBenway

had a stock z80A 3.5mhz like the speccy, but generating a flicker free display was hard work on a zx81..
