Michael performs David Rakowski's "Mr. Trampoline Man" for talking drum (cradled under his left arm) and tabla (right hand and on a chair), a movement of "Snaggle", which he commissioned. The piece is a passacaglia, with the passacaglia theme given by the talking drum.

This performance is from a concert and colloquium Michael gave at Brandeis University on November 29, 2007 in the multimedia classroom of Slosberg Music Center. Michael also discussed and performed pieces by Jason Eckardt, Eric Moe, and River Guerguerian.

The giggle heard at the end of the recording is the composer, who had just heard and seen his piece live for the first time.

Michael has recorded "Mr. Trampoline Man" among many other pieces for hand drums on Capstone Records CPS-8773, "so long, thanks..."

Recorded live on a Flip Video Ultra.

  • 7 notes? are there syllables? One of my students sent me an email about that instrument, too.

    this what he wrote me:

I've seen this instrument..mostly on video - it's native to Kerala and generally stays there. Chenda is a drum that's closely related..from there..which is a little more popular.

  • Hi

Have been trying to post a reply for a while but something seems to be wrong with my browser. You can search for 'Edakka' in youtube. There are quiet a few demonstrations that have been posted. The Edakka is also Hour-glass shaped. The 7 notes are derived by changing the tension of the strings that hold the heads together.

    Cheers

  • I think I just sent you a message...

How dio you use it with a footpedal?

  • Hi

No I have never heard of that...what is it?

Thank you. I hope to up on myspace more, sorry for the delay in getting back to you

  • Cool sound compliments between the TD and tabla. I've got an 8" custom-built talking drum I use with foot pedal and drumset heads.

  • Hi, I'm a big fan of the talking drum. Wondering if you've heard of the 'edakka', a talking drum from the state of kerala in India. Great video by the way.

  • Hi,

Thank you. This set-up was chosen by the composer, David Rakowski...it was one of a few options

The drum is a large India Street drum. He makes them in Tennessee, USA.

Lately, I have been using this set-up with a Brazilian tan-tan played by a foot pedal and bells on my other foot

  • Hey that's a pretty neat set-up, the tabla and talking drum. They compliment each other well. I thought about doing the talking drum with a doumbek. Tell me, is that a 10" diameter talking drum? What brand is it?

    Thanks
