China - Hainan Island Train Ferry

Hainan Island is connected to the Chinese mainland by a train ferry opened in 2007. A new service operates from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou (Canton) to the beautiful tropical beach resort of Sanya. Here is the new Sanya - Beijing service being propelled onto the train ferry by DF4DD 1028 and DF4DD 1027 (both not on video).

There can't be too many cars that make up the train

IIRC it is made up of 14 coaches which are split into 3 - 4 - 4 - 3 for loading into the ships hold.

in denmark we closed the ferrys in 1996. train ferrys for big national routes are to bad. but in dk we have a ferry to germany(rødby - puttgarden) where some ICE are ferryed over towards hamborg-berlin or towards copenhagen:D

Decades ago in the United State there were train ferries everywhere but with the demise of passenger train travel (not talking about regional/commuter train service) in the United States the train ferries were dismantled.

Amazing. I guess there was a long bridge to connect Hainan and Mainland China...
