Mexico City used to be a swamp, with the Xochimilco canals at its southern edge the main remaining natural body of water in the city. There are literally hundreds of mariachi boats, flower boats, taco boats, marimba boats, and michelada boats cruising up and down the canals, which stretch for many tens of km. Weekday mornings are calm and quiet; here, on a Saturday afternoon, it's a zoo of chilangos.
