Mi Amado
Lyrics by Sam M. Lewis and Joe Young
Music by Harry Warren
Sung by Lupe Vélez
Recorded March 30, 1929
Victor 21932

The song "Mi Amado" was Harry Warren's first song written for a motion picture "The Wolf Song" starring Lupe Velez and Gary Cooper. The film was released on March 30 1929, the same day that this recording was made. The production was a silent film, with talking sequences, synchronized music and sound effects. An incomplete print of the film exists in the Library of Congress film archive (the film's soundtrack is presumed lost).

A brief synopsis of the film:
In 1840, Sam Lash (Gary Cooper) heads west for adventure. He meets up with some mountain men, and they head for the Rockies to trap beavers and cats. In Taos he meets Lola (Lupe Vélez), a beautiful Mexican girl from a proud and rich family. They fall in love and he persuades her to elope with him. After they get married, Sam is torn between his love for Lola and his yearn for travelin'.

There are only two known recordings of Lupe Vélez. The other was "Where is the Song of Songs for Me" on the flip side of this record which I have already posted on my channel.

  • A wonderful song & montage! Shame Ms. Vélez had such a tragic life. Thanks for uploading this treasure & sharing it with us all.

  • @PlayIt4MeAgainSam Thanks for watching. This is indeed a rare recording of hers. The only record she ever made.

  • She is so beautiful.... A bit hard to understand at first, but with a little careful listening it became clear. Maybe age has taken the edge off my hearing a bit. Lovely song.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • @bill3murr I have trouble understanding all the lyrics and I haven't found the words anywhere on the internet. The sheet music was recently listed on Ebay, but it seems to be quite rare.

  • Just like the dawning meets the morning,

    And wakes the world up with a song;

At a glance you seemed to make

    My lonely heart awake,

    The day you came along.

Give me kisses dipped in moonlight,

'Mid the romance of the moonlight,

While I whisper to you tenderly, "I love you, mi amado."

  • Her leading man in this early part-talkie was none other than Gary Cooper, with whom she was having a torrid, off-screen affair at the time. Cooper even has a very brief, full-frontal nude scene in this, VERY rare for the era. The director was Cooper's friend Victor Fleming. The future director of 2 of the most beloved films of all time (in the same year, yet), "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With The Wind," would direct Coop, later the same year, in the film that really made him, "The Virginian."

  • The Words.Every little heart is wrapped around a quaint little love song,a song of bliss! x2.But my lonely heart went out and found its own little love song,it goes like this x2.My beloved of the mountains you are mighty as the mountains so I whisper to you tenderly I need you M.A.You have eyes that shame the sunbeams with the fire of the sunbeams,so I whisper to you tenderly I want you M.A..Just like thedawning meets the morning and wakes the world up with a song,at a glance you seemed to make
