Depression is no joke, and suicide certainly isn't either, but sometimes you've gotta laugh to keep from crying. . . .or worse. Marta, the bass player on this song, lost her only sister to suicide. I found that out while we were in the middle of recording this track and offered to scrap it, but she wanted it on the album.
I firmly believe that no mere Song could drive anyone to suicide, I think that's just useless finger-pointing. I also think people often indulge in 'they'll be sorry when I'm dead!' sorts of fantasies when they're feeling really low and unappreciated. That is what this song is really about, to remind myself that these thoughts are really just self-indulgent.
I don't take these issues or these feelings at all lightly really, but sometimes we need to laugh at ourselves to keep us from taking ourselves, and life too seriously.
As a friend of mine once told me 'suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. ~ Lee
Try sending it to Bud Cort. He seems nice.
