My dad took this back in '64 and just found it a little bit ago. It's funny to see how much has changed in Houghton (and how little!!). Hope you enjoy!

  • As a current MTU student, this video is really great. Can anybody name the music to which the video is set?

  • @AndersonJay07 The music is by artist Aidan O'Rourke titled "An Tobar." It's the music Youtube picks for you due to copyright laws. Glad you enjoyed!

  • I think it's hilarious that we will always have in common the fact that: a) there were no women at Tech back then, and there are no women there today, and b) we know how to drink, to put it simply. I do have a couple questions though: what is a TOOT? And, we saw what a Techman is in '64, what would a Techman look like in 2011? Much change?

  • It was actually April 1965, not 1964. Look at 7:00. My brother, also a toot from Houghton (in-town toot,) noticed this absolute proof. The library is also under construction.

  • I always heard a TOOT was a Tech Out Of Towner, in other words not a local.

  • Fond memories... Thank-you for sharing. I concur with rdennyhud on the definition of a TOOT. As I was told by a local young lady, it was the association of a Train/Railroad Engineer with a Tech Engineering Student. My guess is that more than a few LocalMaki's thought we were studying to run trains. The term TOOT was often used by unhappy, local young men to deride Techmen that were lucky enough to be on a date with a local young lovely. My 2nd year was the 1st for Co-Ed Hall.. Heaven sent!

  • Except for freshman week hazing (our class had a tomato fight on Riply Hill) and some great hockey games at the Dee he captured Da Tech. Yes there were a few women, mostly med techs, and of course Jill the sharpshooter. Thanks for the memories.

  • Amazing trip down memory lane. I transferred to Tech in 64. Too bad your Dad didn't include the old wooden hockey arena and some shots of Tonys Bar and the Ambassador Hotel!

  • Well, there *were* women on campus back then. I graduated in '61 and at that time there were 2 buildings housing women students. Also, the person using the centrifuge in the video is obviously a woman.

I would like to know how he converted what probably was an 8mm movie to digital. We have many that I'd like to do that with

  • I believe that "toot" was the term applied by locals to Tech students--A reference to "engineers" that toot the whistle on railroad locomotives.
