I'm kind of getting there... so it is actually possible. Before trying to ad the thinner strings make sure you feel entirely comfortable about the bass pattern as Tommy says. That what has done the trick for me

@ox0Jason0xo yep why was this a fail can you not think of anything better to say im just gonna say mt point again once you learn the song really slowly you kinda stumble upon the style and are suddenly just randomly able to do it in any position so please be quiet

@ox0Jason0xo what are you talking about you havnt even heard me play and why are you re learning it if you can do it already?! and yes i can make up a bass line and a melody its so easy once you know how all you do is hold a chord and the melody is usually within the outline of the chord and then you apply boom chick style

@guitarreilly and thats why you will never play this stuff naturally! i used to think like you and now i have to relearn this stuff because i did it via tabs and slowly doing it! now ive gone back and am doing this and can now jam out stuff in this style by starting a bass line and adding melody lines

I'm saying that if you approach it as a problem rather than a fun challenge you usually end up not liking the process of learning it at all. Look at it positively ("I'm becoming better!") instead of negatively ("I still suck!").

Yes, I can "boom-chick", but I'm not nearly as good as Tommy, obviously. I'm not here to boast >_>

@Demoras By "problem" I mean that it is not easy to play, not that it sounds bad. And if you are so smart, show us some of that boom chick magic yourself...

@usalespaul59 That's not a problem. That's a challenge, and it's incredibly fun and rewarding to work at it! How is it a problem if it ends up sounding amazin? Indeed, it isn't :)

goes way back, Travis picking, Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotton,once you get the independence comes it all falls together and you DON'T NEED a thumb pick to do this, don't think about it is difficult when too much 'mind' is put in...he's showing a MUCH more difficult version than alternate picking as he's doing this with three stings and through chord changes...I would suggest start with John Hurt and work UP to this...to me he's showing a more complex version of alternate picking

The problem is when the melody and the bass line are rhytmicaly apart... you don't have 2 brains. Apart, I mean, the melody plays a tripplet for instance and then a 1/2 pause then 1/2 (weak time)... that's when this stuff becomes difficult. You really should be playing that bass line WITHOUT even thinking about it. And that's the problem IMO...
