The totalitarian system of te USSR was not a socialist society, because socialism means the deterioration of the state once the private ownership of businesses has been abolished. Instead, it was a totalitarian system centred on the ego of Stalin which became irreversable and self-destructive after his death.

Of course the USSR didn't fit the bill... nothing ever will. The USSR was just a manifestation of reality... a reality academic Marxists don't want to accept. I'm sure some would argue, too, that if we tried Nazism "the right way" it would work out great. But I'm not giving that the time of day either...

@michaelwuzthere Communism is when all property (esp. capital -- means of production) is owned "communally", per Marx. Capitalism is where property and capital are privately owned. Marx considered socialism the "transitory phase" between capitalism and "pure" communism. In the socialism phase, a powerful state would centrally plan distribution of resources and work towards an "egalitarian" society. Per the actual definitions, America and Europe are both socialist. So is Obama.
