I'm a state of Georgia employee and we get off for the Holiday, Confederate Memorial Day every year. Never heard of it til I started working for the State so I decided to take to the streets and ask my friends and not so friends about their knowledge of this renowned State treasure.

@sonotarockstar Thanks for commenting. Yes it's common knowledge that some blacks owned slaves and that some slaves were white but what's your point?

@TexianPride Rober E. Lee sent himself to fight. He had been part of the federal army in 1860 but couldn't bare the thought of marching on his own home state of Virginia. He couldn't lead an attack on the land he and his family and neighbors lived. I'm from Alabama, and I think I would've decided about the same way if I had been in his shoes. I don't support slavery and I have no problem with ppl of color. Lol, I do have problems with induviduals, and induviduals come in all races and background

@Odinak Not speaking for slaves here, but in 1860, in South Carolina, 125 free African Americans owned slaves. A freed save named William Ellison "owned" the most slaves in South Carolina. If I remember correctly, the # was around 200. Anyways, I've given you the name and state, you can look into it yourself if you're interested.

I celebrate Confederate Memorial Day in honor of my ancestors who fought in the Confederate army.
I dont see how people are turning this in to a race battle here.
Racists will allways find there way in to these things that doesent mean the holiday is only celebrated by racists.
This holday is for celebrateing the men who fought not the men who sent them to fight.

You know the "picnic" etymology is a rumor, right? Check your facts. You're only supporting prejudices when you give into those lies so easily.

Also, I worked for the state of GA a few years ago. Not only did we get Confederate Memorial Day, but we also got Robert E. Lee Day or Robert E. Lee's birthday or something like that. Y'all still that day off, too? I thought it was really weird that we'd get those days off, but nobody complained about it because you just don't mess with a state employee's holidays. People will mess you up for taking away a paid day off. lol

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth." Of course, maybe Alexander Stephens, that CSA VP dude, was just talking out of his ass.

@UrlsGrrl54 also you speak as if the south did something illegal you ever wonder why no politician was tried and hung after the war let em show you something else you didnt research. The Tenth Amendment is similar to an earlier provision of the Articles of Confederation: "Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled." they were legal
