Extracting troubles - Kashagan oil field

The Kashagan oil field in the Caspian Sea is one of the largest oil fields discovered in the last few decades. The field is developed by a consortium of oil companies including Eni, Total, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Shell, Inpex and KazMunayGaz with financial support from several banks such as BNP Paribas, Citigroup, Societè Generale, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Mitsubishi Trust and Banking Corporation, Mizuho Bank and the ING Group.

Civil society groups have been raising concerns with BNP Paribas and other financial institutions about the environmental and public health dangers associated with Kashagan. An international Fact Finding Mission in the Northern Caspian region, conducted in September 2007, found evidence of extremely high environmental and social impacts and risks, and violations of international standards, including the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards, in the development of Kashagans offshore and onshore operations.

The Caspian Sea is the largest reserve of fresh water in Central Asia. The natural life of a whole continent depends on it. If the oil industry destroys this sea, Kazakhstan will remain behind with a deserted land and a dead sea.

Such a rubbish, there are no flare in the North Caspian sea and if it stinks in Atyrau, it more of the exhaust gases of the car than from a field which is not even on line yet. The regulations are the strongest i have ever met in the offshore and marine industry, even our treated water is carried away by tankers for processing onshore. The words were definitively put in the months of the "villagers" ;-). This "video" is the worse piece of stupid propaganda I have ever watched

This is a poor expose. I work on the Kashagan project and never have we been under such pressures to protect the environment. We are not producing yet so can't have caused the trouble whoch are described. These were caused by Societ era production methods which are still in effect. On our offshore facility the water we reject to the sea is actually cleaner than the one already there. We have spent a substential amount of the development project on mappibg the environmental sensitive areas and t

Ooops, high sulphur content rapidly corrodes pipe. Extraction difficulties, dang! Geo-political climate in that part of the world not very stable either. Plus I feel bad for all the poor people who live near oil fields. As soon as the nations want the oil, the local peoples life styles are destroyed. I know I'd be pissed.
