"Originally, Unreal was going to be a Quake-style shooter—earlier screens showed a large status bar and centered weapons, similar to Doom and Quake. The main character was also going to be a woman, however in the final version the main character's gender is selectable in the game's "player setup" screen, though the default is a female character named Gina.

One of the weapons shown in early screenshots was the "Quadshot"—a four-barreled shotgun. The model remains in-game, while there is no code for the weapon to function. Another weapon shown was a different pistol, however this may have just been an early version of the Automag. At one point the rifle could fire three shots at once, which is wrongly stated as the alternate fire in the Unreal manual that comes with the Unreal Anthology.

As development progressed, various levels were cut from development. A few of these levels reappeared in the Return to Na Pali expansion pack. A number of enemies from early versions are present in the released software but with variations and improvements to their look. One monster that didn't make the cut was a dragon." - wikipedia

  • Through the looking glass. Yes this demo would certainly have impressed me in 1996. The original unreal still does look pretty good to me anyway.

  • They were working already on it in 1996?? The Year Quake1 came out? Unbelievable. Unreal is really unreal.

  • I would like to know how mutch of the quake engine influiciate then, or if it dont at all.

  • I remember when I played Unreal Tournament 99 back in the day for the first time. I was amazed..till this day I still love that game and it has some great graphics and physics. Facing Worlds..when I saw the Earth floating my mind exploded all over the room. Haha. What makes me laugh though is that Earth graphic from Facing Worlds back in 1999 is still a lot more accurate and looks better than the graphics of the Earth in Call of Duty Black Ops zombie map Moon.

  • To be able to walk first you have to crawl

  • The Music. The Graphic. When i reached this first Outdoor Level, this amazing Wohaaaa moment ;(

I miss this moments in actual games ;(

  • Absolutely best game ever

  • @kevenezz You probably only played the first 4 levels. It's only past these levels that the real game starts...

  • @dumbasspauldentonkin ...Composed by the same person, actually. The main composer of both Unreal and of DEHR is Alexander Brandon, or as known in the tracker community, Siren.

  • @kevenzz Wait....DO YOU STILL HAVE THOSE EARLY BETAS AND ALPHAS?!?!

If so,some of them could use to the Unreal community (like oldUnreal and BeyondUnreal) ,since there are only 3 betas of Unreal.

  • @PanterAmetal100 Hell it's not only graphics. The tracker music is beautiful, so full of warmth and dynamism. You hardly ever get music like this nowadays... though Deus Ex Revolution sounds like it's going to have a similar, tracker-inspired soundtrack.
