@ez2curanut The stones do fracture a little at the edge you strike with each hit. I have never had one break in my hand however. Eventually, you will wear down the edges so far that it makes it difficult to get a spark from the steel. At this point, I will take another rock and use a glancing blow to forcefully fracture the flint so I have new edges to work with. After the rock becomes too small, I discard and get another one. Thanks for asking.

wyldediver, you conducted an excellent demonstration of the essential hand technique for striking steel on flint to generate sparks on tinder material. You provided bonus information on tinder material including the use of unraveled jute twine for primary kindling. You have a good speaking voice that is ideal for these types of demonstration videos. You could do this for a profession if Hollywood discovered you.

I don't mind the demonstration and advertisement. Makes sense; viewers might want to purchase. You did a fine job demonstarting the basic steel striking flint technique. Thanks to videos like yours, I'm learning a lot about survival firestarting. You also portray a strong, confident, instructional voice. One thinks you might be a law enforcement type or military NCO. You seem to be a natural for these kinds of instructional and demo videos and films.

@jeffyoung60 I served my time, so you are correct. I think a lot of folks need to realize that the custom hand made leather wallet comprises a lot of the cost. How much does a cheap wallet at walmart cost? It ain't half the construction either. Everything is subjective.

Also, never buy flint. Any hard rock that can be broken into flakes will work well. But any hard rock will work. Even granite will work.

Dont waste your money on this. That striker doesnt throw very good sparks. I can get it on the first strike every strike with my strikers i make. I have heard if u are not a blacksmith and wat to make a striker, you can take an old file and break a piece off, then grind the teeth off of the edge and use that smooth edge for striking. And te char cloth is of low quality. It should not fall apart at the weave when torn. It also should not fall apart anywhere when handled.

@Hoosierarcher the steel should actually be hardened. The flint shaves off little pieces of steel that ignite from the energy of the strike. If the steel is not hardened, the steel will bend or shave off too easily, and this lack of resistance will result in few or no sparks that are not hot and burn out quick. A good striker will be so hard that if u drop it on acement floor it will shatter

The jute collected like that is usually referred to as a "nest" and the steel striker shouldn't be hardened steel as it is the steel that actually makes the spark. The flint is actually harder than the steel. I looked at KSF's website and they don't have those wallets listed anymore.

Well done; "Old School" firemaking at its finest! It very well might be easier to carry a firesteel and cottonball or lighter, but it's good to know more ways than just one to make fire. Thank you sir!

not the best quality char cloth notice how it kind of fell apart along the weave when he tore it. you don't need some special pouch. save your money. make your own kit it is easy
