@hvychvy: Regarding when crossing warning is given: Recent Federal Regulations require that under speeds of 45 MPH, the horn must be sounded so as to provide at least 15 secs., but no more than 20 secs. of crossing warning. This all came about as a result of the new "Quiet Zone" regulations prompted by too many compaints from communities relative to those people disturbed by train whistles. This Engineer is right on target. Precise judgment needed. Doesn't apply at speeds over 45 MPH.
