A modern western classic written by the legendary Ian Tyson, this song is a tribute to another "legendary" artist - Charles Russell.

Continuing my explorations on the cello banjo, I've capoed up to the key of B to see how well this instrument takes to the capo. I seems to work very well...

  • Hmm... You are capoed up to Bb at the 4th fret. That means you are tuned to Gb open?

  • I'm actually capoed up to B (not Bb) at the 4th, so the open neck is tuned to G. The only thing out of the ordinary is the use of light gauge strings (the ones recommended for "A" tuning) instead of the heavy set intended for "G" tuning.

  • Beautiful song. I love that rhythm thing you do with your thumb on the head! Very nice!

  • I'm with the person who says they like your version better than Ian Tyson's. Honest & real! This song means extra to me 'cause my people are from the Snowy Mountains-Judith Basin of Montana, and my dad was a saddlemaker born in 1897. (He was friends with the other cowboy artist, JK Ralston.) But anyhow, great rendition of a good song, Mike!

  • Mister. you've got a better presentation than I & S.... Reckon I'll look the rest of your work up and add to favorites

    Garcias

  • really nicely done

  • Edit** normal 5 string tab, I dont have a cello banjo (is it the same?)

  • Mr. Iverson, I have to thank you! Just about everything I've learned on the banjo is from you're online instruction. This is a phenomenal song, any chance you might be putting the tab of this out?

    -- Thanks,

    Ian

  • You're right. It does say B and not Bb. Dang! Another one of those senior moments.
