For our daughter, when the symptoms started showing as something abnormal, they started immediately. She didn't really seem to be coughing during the day, then I put her to bed and she started coughing and gagging in her sleep. It was so sudden that I couldn't run into her bedroom fast enough. She would have these horrible fits of coughing and gagging, then be just fine. Her only symptom was coughing.
