Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 † 1750)

The original piece is part of Bach's Orchestral Suite No.3 in D major, BWV1068, written for his patron Prince Leopold of Anhalt sometime between the years 1717 and 1723.

The title comes from violinist Wilhelmj's late 19th century arrangement of the piece for violin and piano. By transposing the key of the piece from its original D major to C major and transposing the melody down an octave, Wilhelmj was able to play the piece on only one string of his violin, the G string.

  • AWESOME, god bless J.S. Bach for this stunning composition

  • What a great song! If only more people showed appreciation for this music. They may not have some modern artists without musicians like Bach.

  • moves me to tears every time i hear it!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @guli16 It's Jeroboam Offering Sacrifice for the Idol, by Jean-Honore Fragonard, 1752

  • @NewtonBlog it's a harpsichord you goofball

  • @whomakemefeel i like you russians

  • Sublime!!!

  • it always irritates me that fans of rock and heavy metal like myself can't appreciate (or simply don't know) where many of the melodies originally came from.

  • Anyone know the name of the painting?

  • @NewtonBlog Its a Harpsichord by the way, and that was traditional at the time. The player would 'realise' the chords of the piece from the baseline the cellos are playing and the numbers written above their music. As its music for small(ish) rooms you'd have a more intimate experience listening to it and they don't have the ability to play different volumes so they often sound like they're in the background in recordings.

But as a violinist I'm biased and I agree with your point :D
