@Illchangeitlater There was a story about someone "smoking" and attacked. All bees communicate the same. Smoke works to calm the bees by floating around and getting in the way of the alarm pheromones; essentially reducing the number of bees that get the “attack now!” message. Managers of European honeybees often don’t need to use much smoke to keep their hives calm while they work them. However, using lots of smoke can keep African bees in a state of relative calm.

@HTCSWEOD Iv'e heard that africanized bees are actually aggravated by smokers. That when you present smoke before opening the hive, they already start to collect at the entrance and start to attack. This isn't true?

I also have to inquire... why didn't you use a smoker to calm the colony and reduce their ability to communicate alarms? Or was it your intent to demonstrate maximum aggression for filming purposes? It's been my experience that the most defensive bees also produce the greatest quantities of honey and have proven to be the most disease resistant. I suggest a smoker when inspecting or opening a hive body. No need to stress the bees, I expect bees to defend from intrusion...
