BARRIERS AND PASSES
Produced by: The Board of National Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States
Made with the cooperation and assistance of the staff Of the War Relocation Authority
"Barriers and Passes" is a "silent" film (very much like a video PowerPoint presentation) that depicts the experience of 110,000 Japanese, primarily US citizens interned in camps located in mostly desolate regions throughout the country from California to Arkansas. This film was produced just after World War II by the Board of National Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.
"Barriers and Passes" is a rarity for its time, made just months after the end of the War which features Asian Americans in a positive light, highlighting the wartime efforts of Japanese Americans on behalf of their country even while that same country interned their families in camps. this short film is remarkable for its vivid depiction of normal everyday life in the camps.
