I've heard this guy's book An Improviser's OS is fantastic. I wouldn't doubt it, given his incredible playing. Jazzy devil horns!

Just heard Henderson classifying him as someone with an appetite for creating non-commercial guitar music. So I'm checking him out in consequence and boy am I delighted!

First & foremost, his phrasing is very unique. Doesn't use a lot of straight linear lines nonstop which I find pretty boring these days.

Funky & Punchy with an interesting attitude.

i dont think the claim that he is not using the old vocabulary is entirely accurate. you dont just go out and create a new language out of nothing, it has to come from somewhere. bebop vocabulary consists of more than just the licks a la charlie parker, it is the whole exploration of the upper extensions and beyond. you dont have to play ba-be-do-ba da-bop to have your language stem from bebop. i would consider that more of a "dialect" or style issue rather than language...

@ponderingwanderer besides, he is obviously heavily blues influenced. you can hear it all over the place. dont get me wrong, i totally dig what he is doing, and i love keith carlock, i just dont think it is necessary to create a new language in order to say something new or relevant. think about it... how long have people been speaking english? new words may arise here and there but when was the last time you knew of that a new language developed spontaneously? it just doesnt happen like that.
