My own composition: an operatic fantasy: a pastiche in the style of Liszt and Thalberg. Performance taken from an open air recital.

  • Why are there only like 10 people in the audience? Certainly you deserve a larger crowd.

  • It was at a small local music festival in a village, so to be honest I didn't expect much of a turnout. There were actually more like 25 there, but they were all dotted around the gardens in which my performance took place, so the applause is very scattered.

  • hey alkan liszt i really admire your composition. may i ask how u first went about composing? thank u :)

  • I improvise a lot. In this case I had improvised on the themes quite a bit, then tried to write a musical summary of what was going on in the various improvised manipulations of themes, prune the bits that I felt were superfluous and put together the various sections into a coherent structure (at this point I did compose linking sections where necessary). Perhaps it would be more correct to start by defining the structure first, I don't know.

  • Great composition! I enjoyed especially the very virtuoso, technically demanding passages. However, I must comment that the first half of your composition had very repetitive harmonic structures and could do with a little more modulation into foreign keys. You do make up for this with very contrasting thematic manipulation though. (I am a composer myself.) It does sound very Lisztian indeed.

  • (cont.) Glad you enjoyed it, though. I'm not surprised it sounds Lisztian - many of the variations were done very much "in the style" of various Liszt and Thalberg operatic paraphrases, music for which I have a considerable fondness.

  • NICE piano~!!!and of course, nice playing!

  • This is absolutely excellent.

As well as two you mentioned (especially Thalberg), this piece reminds me of Debussy at points.

  • You are a great pianist already. Bravo!!
