Occupy Raleigh's #D17 day of action included the arrival of Walkupy. They are a group of protesters who started in NYC, marched to DC with Atlanta, GA being their final destination. After completing over 500 miles of the journey they arrived in Raleigh on December 17th, the 3 month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement (just over 2 months for Occupy Raleigh). We met them at Mordecai Historic Park in Raleigh then marched south by the Governor's Mansion and on to the State Capitol. We then turned west down Hillsborough St. toward the camp. Two blocks from the camp the Police arrived and arrested most of the Walkupy marchers. They have marched in the street in every city they have visited and were only escorted by Police in support, until they arrived in Raleigh. Their welcome here was a harsh one.

  • @eyewall41 Didn't the police let it go? I do believe I heard them say...stay on the sidewalk and stay out of the street. The occupiers that were arrested deliberately went into the street. Are you telling me that the occupiers can't walk the sidewalk? They require a high traffic road to prove their point? The majority of the protestors did exactly what the police asked them to do. The six that didn't went to jail. Just like you stated...on purpose. So what's with the complaining?

  • @TeaPartyMember230 What I am saying is all they had to do is let everyone finish the march with the camp being 2 blocks away. The police are well aware of where it is in relation to our location at that time. The fact they did not and swarmed in caused far more disruption than the march ever did. The warnings prompted some protesters to act in civil disobedience. I am sure it was no mystery to them that this would occur. Obviously we will never agree so I will leave it here.

  • Law was broken. Police asked numerous times to get off the street and get on sidewalk. Occupiers continued to go into street. I was standing there watching the whole thing.

  • @TeaPartyMember230 Given your screen name it is likely you are opposed to occupy or have very little understanding of it. With this in mind I expect this kind of response. Yes technically being in the street might be against the law but this was a just a bit ridiculous 2 blocks from the destination. They could have just let it go and it would have been over without any problem. Those who who were arrested acted in civil disobedience as a form of protest.

  • Was there no other option? Why did this violence occur? Was there no way to find a peaceful resolution? What was the conflict that triggered the violence?

  • @farnsworth2008 There was no conflict. The RPD made the decision to move in on the march when it was 2 blocks from its destination.

  • There was conflict. They were blocking traffic and were called by citizens to respond. The police said NUMEROUS times to please get on the sidewalk and the occupiers that were arrested deliberately went back into the street.

  • @TeaPartyMember230: The law is immaterial and immoral.

  • Tag me in this plz! Thanx

  • @farnsworth2008 What options did the police provide?

Did the police allow the option of proceeding on the sidewalk to reach the destination, if why would that not be a valid option?

Did the police allow the option of simply stopping at the side walk, if so why not sit on the sidewalk?

Was it a requirement that the group go onto the street and if so why would that be the case?

  • @raleighoccupare Can you join me on the occupy form for a better discussion? Did they have any other option? Were they making a request that was unreasonable? Did the Occupy group have any other option? Who caused the violence? Who created the conditions where no other option was available?

  • @eyewall41 did the occupy group break the law? Was the law just? Were the actions of the police just? Why was the law broken? Why did they force the police to commit violence? What would have been wrong with simply standing on the sidewalk?

Can you join me in true discussion on the occupy form in the my story thread?
