@fatcatbuzz For the money you can't go wrong. Protools is expensive, but will give better results. You have to be very good with protools and buy extensive software. This machine sounds really nice and can keep up with the big boys. You only have to buy an Alesis Masterlink to master your recordings. Check out the sound on my Song-- Stakitas Blues, under Marcos Mendoza, Jr.

Nice quality music. I think I may have to get one of these based on your recording alone. Thanks for posting.

Does anyone know the how the sound quality differs from these units compared to computer based program such as Protools? Is there a noticable difference? I only ask because the sampling rate is a little lower on these machines. But, I still have my cassette machines and am happy to use it, though I want to get into the digital realm. I have used Protool, but don't like mixing with a mouse (it is time consuming) and would rather use faders.

I had some difficulties but keep at it and take it in your stride. The rewards are there :)
I purchased the tascam 2488 and I feel its a great machine but not user friendly. I had to purchase the DVD Tutorial.
The manual was written by engineers. They know what they are talking about but they sure didn't write the book for someone just starting out.
