Italy wants to ship 20,000 TONS of their radioactive waste to the USA. There is still no safe technology to store radioactive waste safely. Most of it comes from nuclear power plants. Bush administration pushing for new nukes in USA too, which will make nuclear waste that we can't store rightly. Tell your congressperson to bring HR5632 to the floor of the House to stop Italy from doing this.

You have til June 10,2008 to comment to the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) on such a preposterous proposition. As if nuclear waste and nuclear power could ever be 'green' - maybe radioactive-green, to cancerize you and your children, and mutate your DNA.

Where would you like to put this waste that still will have plutonium mixed in, with just one millionth of a gram of it enough to cause lung cancer and a pound of it enough to cause 454 million lung cancers? Wouldn't it be better not to deal with THE most toxic waste in the world with 'hazardous lives,' like plutonium-239, of 240,000 to 480,000 years, and just build windmills, solar power/voltaic units, hydropower (if not adversely affecting fish spawning), plus use energy efficiency??

Hardly the "world's nuclear garbage dump" the US has the best technology in the world to deal with remediation and reduction of nuclear waste. This is pretty low level stuff and it's economically beneficial to get in on this.

I'm afraid of nuc's. Politicians are always coming up with some solution for alternative power that is expensive and bad for the environment. Why aren't we challenging scientists to go play in their labs and come up with many types of alternative fuels. One comes to my mind real quick: HEMP. Needs no water or fertilizer and is raw material for OIL among a myriad of other things, while cleaning the air. The U.S. jails non violent yet frees a drug dealer to testify against border patrol agents.

You should run it through a breeder reactor like the one at Palo Verde (largest nuc in the world) making more electricity and further depleating it to "safer" levels.

That is why WE have the technology. It would work well if not stifeled by those who live in fear.

Italy has eight nuclear superfund sites it's cleaning up, so Bush steps up to the plate and signs GNEP deals to takes their garbage. The nuclear waste from Italy will come into Oak Ridge Tennessee to be incinerated. Then the more concentrated ashes will be sent to Clive, UT and Richland WA. If this gets approved, the US will be the world's nuclear garbage dump. Lovely.
