An easy, solid, good looking (to me), and most importantly CHEAP solution for building and attaching a toroid to the top of your Tesla coil.

Home Depot
- Aluminum Dryer Tubing 8ft - $6.75
-3" - 4" Toilet Flange - $5.99
-Plastic Dinner Plates - Dollar store, Walmart, garage sales, take you pick
-Zip Ties 8" - Free if you know where to look!
- Washers - whatever is lying around. Not even necessary if you keep your holes small enough.

Also nice because it doesn't use glues or caulk and can be taken apart and put back together with a few more zip ties.
I originally wanted to use nylon(non-metal) bolts but couldn't find any long enough, zip ties may actually be better since it allows the top plate to "settle" into place even if your holes are a hair off.

  • dunno how long the sparks are on this thing, but you shouldnt have the secondary enter inside the tube ever... cuz the sparks will go down the inside of the tube if you have enough power.

I'm sure you know what your doing though... just incase anyone else thinks its a good idea.... dont do it!

  • I just used the dinner plates on my toroid and it looks great and works wonderfully. I added an exacto blade to the top plate pointing up, and ran a wire to it under the plates to shoot some great sparks straight up!

I ocassionally write for electronics magazines, and would like to mention you method some time with credit to you. BTW, it does not look as nice, but if you wrap your toroid with aluminum tape to get a smoother surface, you'll get 2" longer sparks. Just tried it!
