NOTE - - (To get right to the DIY part, without the introduction about Follow focus, etc, go to 3:28

Although this is completely my own video, this DIY project is NOT my own invention. But it is SUCH a cool idea that I just HAD to pass it along!

This is the brainchild of Andrés Desrochers. I found his video on Vimeo and tried it. It is so simple - all the components together cost $1.00 or less. And it works very well. Professional Looking? No, But it DOES achieve professional looking results! Uses a hose clamp, a long thin bolt, a rubber band and some kind of thick wire ( I used a paper clip).

If you have a DOF adapter, and don't already have a follow focus, you might just want to try this. I was a bit skeptical, but had nothing to lose to try, so I did and was blown over at how easy it was. The hardest part about the whole thing is drilling a hole in the hose clamp!

Again - NOT my own idea, but I felt I HAD to pass this along! ENJOY!!

  • Is that an epiphone wildkat?

  • @camsnyde Nope, it's a Gibson ES-175-D (old and in need of some repair work, but otherwise an AWESOME guitar!

  • I just found this one here in Canada, Kitchen Stuff Plus stores. True, it's $4 vs your $1, but this seems a lot safer solution, plus it looks a mile nicer: [Insert_Triple_W].rgbfilter.[insert_com]/?p=15296 (Silicon jar opener. Composed of a rubbery silicon material with a hard plastic tightening collar, it is made to open the toughest of jars)

There is no way you can scratch your lens if you're concerned about that. I sure am with my Canon 7D and few quite expensive lenses.

  • @meeyaomestan That is a NICE solution!!

  • Ducky, out of focus

  • @Rockadell Yeah, a bit. But the idea here is that you CAN work this to rack measured focus points. It was testing the principle.

  • skip to 4:17 -your welcome

  • I was just thinking.... What if you used a ziptie instead of the hose clamp and bolt? i think that could work just as good unless the zip tie is too flimsy?
