More than 6, 000 extra police on the streets of Athens didn't stop a new wave of violence.
The city was bracing itself for trouble as protesters marked the anniversary of the police killing of a teenager a year ago that sparked the country's worst riots in decades.
Demonstrators smashed shop windows, set light to waste bins and hurled stones at police in riot gear.
Officers responded with tear gas.
Sunday's violence was nowhere near on the scale of that which erupted in December 2008 after the shooting of 15-year-old Alex Grigoropoulos.
It happened during a confrontation in a district of Athens where clashes between youths and police were frequent.
The newly-elected Greek government had pledged tough security measures to avoid a repeat.
About 75 people were arrested on Saturday for carrying wooden stakes or throwing stones at police.
But some in Athens say the trouble is not solely in response to the teenager's death.
[Panagiotis Memai, Student]:
"That was the excuse that began this outburst but we're seeing things like unemployment and other issues and the young generation is frustrated and I believe they're right."
A memorial service for the dead teenager has been planned.
Further protests are expected.
