Twenty-four notes. It's a simple melody, 150 years old, that can express our gratitude when words fail. Taps honors the men and women who have laid down their lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of freedom. Fair winds and following seas, shipmates.

This version of taps was recorded by the United States Navy Band at the following locations:

Display Ship Barry, Washington Navy Yard
U.S. Navy Memorial, Washington, D.C.
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

My brother passed away Thursday. Because of health issues, I was unable to attend his service this evening. He was in the army, and the military will honor him, as I do. I love you Mike.

"During the American Civil War, an officer for the Union was walking through the after math of a battle and stumbled upon the body of his son, who he thought was away at school, but had in fact joined the Confederacy. In his pocket was a sheet of paper with a few bars of music scribbled on it and the officer requested the bugler play the notes at his son's funeral.

It was TAPS, which is now played at every American soldiers funeral."
