The Sandfish is named because of its seeming ability to "swim" through the sand. It achieves this by having a super streamlined body, smooth scales, fringed feet, and a pointed nose. They can be found in Saudi Arabia and other neighboring countries. The species in this video are the Common Sandfish (Scincus Scincus) The Eastern Sandfish (Scincus Mitranus) and Scincus Hemprichii.

  • @gongylus thanks for the info! I'm not new to keeping reptiles, I just recently got into this species of skink and didn't know much about them. In the past, I've kept snakes and various amphibians (some frogs, newts, salamanders etc.) And right now I have a chinese water dragon and I'm looking to set up a desert hairy scorpion enclosure :)

  • @afaylenedavie No problem. Sounds like you've got some stuff planned. I love Chinese water dragons, infact I made a video on them. :)

  • @MikeMcGecko I'm new to sandfish, but am seriously interested in getting one. The easterns look a little boring to me, but the ones with the yellow stripes are awesome! Are they a different species?

  • @afaylenedavie Yeah, they are different species. The ones with the base color of brown with yellow stripes are just called Common Sandfish or Scincus scincus.

  • I would say that does not change anything if a picture author feels robbed.

No - juveniles of mitranus have same color as parents. I have some here. Therefore, I think I see a Scincopus fasciatus baby. But I'm unshure cause

i have never seen this rare Species live.

  • @gongylus Interesting, I did not know that they had the same coloring throughout there lifetime. Who knows about that picture though. I could even be a new species, unlikely, but possible.

  • they are so cute!! They look like little rat fish lizards...WANT NOW! Must have rafizard!!

  • thumbs up if u like the pic at 00:53 :)

  • @MikeMcGecko true that, got a Schneiders myself.

  • @Simplications I've heard their skin is sensitive to oil from your hands, probably they'll get a rash or something, so you may need to wash you're hands before handling them.

  • @Simplications I've heard they can get up to 8 inches but I've seen smaller. I don't think they really like to be handled. Probably if you tried to pick one up it would most likely jump out of your hands and burrow back into the ground. But If you spend a good deal of time getting them used to you I don't see why they would have a problem being handled once in a while. If you want a skink that likes to be handled then I would get a Schneider's Skink. They're more common and are certainly pretty.

  • @MikeMcGecko I have many things planned ;) its just a matter of money and space :(

  • @afaylenedavie

It is just the opposite. I have held for 15 years, the colorful scincus scincus. Beautiful animals - but compared with the behavior of scincus mitranus they are boring.

Since 4 years I care now mitranus and am fascinated. Before you buy you time quite as highly specialized animals please read a lot literature. Particularly in terms of light and substrate can go wrong.
