1:39 Holy shit, that really is fantastic! No wonder so many people were clawing and crawling all over each other to get that sound. That sound is rock having its first tooth come in.

maybe so, but I think Marty's amazing vocals and the actual song itself is what makes it great, not a distortion break on a guitar.

What happened that caused the distortion with the lead guitar in the turn around was Grady Martin's guitar amp blew a tube and caused the amp to square wave or distort. At first they were going to re-do the song but Owen Bradley liked it and it stayed beacuse even though it was distorted it kept the intonation. Glen Snoddy the house engineer looked at the amp and figured out what was the cause. He in turn built and invented a distortion box.

It's clearly not a bass. Electric bass guitars at that time only had flatwound strings and those would not have enough top end and grind, even with distortion. It's a baritone guitar.

Marty's vocals are amazing as always, but it would be silly to deny that people flipped over the sound of the guitar in this recording. It was all an accident, I heard that the amp was blown and they didn't know it until playback because they recorded it live as was custom in those days... When they heard it they wanted to go back and correct it and Marty himself loved the sound and told them to leave it in... he was right to do so...if it wasn't a big deal why do they still talk about it today?

Maybe so, but the bass guitar gets me back to play this song over and over.

Grady played all sorts of heavy-strung guitars, it's not a bass RavenMoon. wyncrtr1 is correct and Nashville, first again, didn't need help from the Ventures. Grady also played all the way thru' 'El Paso' and about nine minutes' worth of Country Joe's epic Guthrie Track. THE top Nashville guitarist.
