Did you ever want to make a creative youtube camcorder video, with annotations, and music, of a home? Perhaps you wanted one for yourself and friends, or for a real estate tour if your house is for sale.

The video is a collection of highlights of the interior and exterior, with a goal of letting the viewer experience the artistic style and creative impression that the house makes. In a way, it's a little like trying to create a visual poem instead of a technical manual.

This video is an example of showing close-up shots of details and materials used, along with wider views and panoramic views of the interior of a house. The video was made using a Canon FS100 with 48x optical zoom.

The software is Windows Movie Maker version 6 that comes with the Vista operating system and the computer has dual intel processing chlps.

Different from traditional photos of rooms, this video shows a "different viewpoint ".For example, some video shots begin on the stairway and pan upwards to interesting skylights and a chandelier.

There is a 58 second panoramic view of the living room, kitchen and dining room. This was made by standing in one spot, the camcorder on a tripod, and rotating the head of the tripod, which swivels.

Shooting video indoors means you have issues with the lighting. While the camcorder has a light, it is not enough to light distant walls in a very large room. As you pan around the room the quality of the light changes as you go from windows to walls.

When shooting walls with windows the brightness at the window creates a darker contrast on the wall.

The brightness of the recordered video clip can be increased in Movie Maker version 6 by going to Effects. However, the overall brightness is then increased and the windows have a glowing glare then.

To show detailed close-ups and then go to a broader view on a camcorder you use the optical zoom to pull back. However, indoors you cannot stand far enough away to get the wide angle that you can get outdoors.

For instance, if you are standing in the doorway of a master bedroom, you are limited. In this case I could get almost one whole wall in a view and then had to pan from left to right. It was not possible to get several walls of the room in one view. Bathroom views also mean the camera can be positioned in the doorway or a corner, while trying to get the widest camera angle.

Other shots show close-ups of exotic granite used in the kitchen counters and bathrooms. Starting close up enables the viewer to see the fine details of the unusual granite.

By using the zoom feature the details that make the craftsmanship or material so valuable are visible. One can start with the details view and zoom to a wider angle, or vice versa.

Showing a collection of highlights in a house is a way to point at special amenities, artistic touches, and interesting features.

Different from a room by room traditional tour, the accessories and style of the house are the main topics. The ideas is to get a "feel" for the house and to give an impression of the "atmosphere" or "mood" the house projects, a little like a stage set for a play, TV show, or movie. What would it really "feel" like to live there? Can a camcorder house tour feel a little like reading poetry?

Starting the video by driving up the driveway helps make the viewers feel they are arriving at a friend's home, in a way, or their own home.

Holding the camcorder steady was a challenge while driving up the driveway, and shooting through the windshield gave the video reflections. Driving with the left hand and holding the camcorder with the right was the only way to do it without help. A golf cart or other mode of transport would give a better picture, but one was not available.

The original video was longer and the file size was so large I had to remove some clips and music so my computer could publish it. After that was done it was uploaded to youtube and youtube's audioswap music was added.

Without professional movie equipment there are issues such as keeping the camcorder steady on the tripod while you swivel it or pan up and down or across. There is the issue of lighting, and a set of lighting equipment would make a big difference.

But, for average homeowners who would like to make a video of their homes to share with others, a camcorder, tripod, Windows Movie Maker or other software, and a computer are the only necessities.

Subtitles were added using youtube's annotations.

The song is "Above the Clouds" which seems an appropriate title in view of the sweeping panoramic views.

  • So true! Thanks for the comment.

  • Thank you! It was fun.

  • Sorry to hear you're having problems. Try some of these possible solutions: save your project, turn your computer off, restart your computer, do a defrag, then try again to publish the video. If this doesn't work try dividing the video into part 1 and part 2 if the file is really big. You can also try removing some clips, or part or all of the audio if you have one. This will make the file smaller. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
