---------------------------------------------------------------------

The first official zoo in New York and the second publicly owned in the nation, the Central Park Zoo opened in the 1860s as a menagerie with a bear and some swans. It was reconstructed in 1934, adding new buildings around the sea lion pool. Closed and renovated again in 1983, it reopened on August 8, 1988 with natural environments for its animals instead of the old-fashioned cages it had used before.http://www.cpzbook.com
