Stephenson is a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. She is probably from a srtongly psychodynamic tradition which - although not exactly scientific - has some usefulness in exploring emotions. She's actually doing a lot better than most in her tradition in this interview, because it's a conversation rather than being he says something and she 'interprets' it.
