Omnia- The well

Green grows the lily oh
Right among the bushes oh

A gentleman was passing by
And he stopped for a drink
As he was dry

At the well below the valley oh
Green grows the lily oh
Right among the bushes oh

My pack is full unto the brim
And if I were to stop
I might fall in

If your true love was passing by
You'd fill him a drink if he were dry

She swore by grass
She swore by corn
Her true love had never been born

He said: young girl
You're swearing wrong
Six fine children you've born

If you be the man of noble fame
You'll tell to me the father of them

There's two of them by your brother John
Another two by your uncle Dan
Another two by your father dear
Green grows the lily oh

If you be the man of noble fame
You'll tell to me what happened to them

There's two buried 'neath the kitchen door
Another two near the stable door
Another two just beside the well
All of them outside the graveyard wall

If you be the man of noble fame
You'll tell to me what'll happen to me

You'll be seven years of ringing a bell
At the well below the valley oh

Seven years of burning in hell

I'll be seven years of ringing a bell
But the Lord above might save my soul
From burning in hell...

  • 3:45, when the lyrics go "But the Lord above might save my soul" - you can hear a whisper in the background saying "I don't think so".

  • @fiernocht Youre right. You dont have to be Pagan. A lot of people just dont get it though. Lots of people miss out on a lot of beautiful music becase their minds are closed. I have one piece of advice to everyone, keep an open mind. Minds are like parachutes, they only function when open. Blessings of the forest and may the powers that be watch over you.

  • Oh, and they turn poems or other things into great songs aswell, aswell as making awesome songs of their own :3

  • I'd suggest that everyone who likes this version should listen to Omnia's other songs. They made a lot of different versions of traditional song, I think that is what they do best. I have been listening to Omnia for years now <3 Truely love them.

  • music is a true expression of the soul...of the mind and of the heart....of the past and of trials ..........so an open mind to what people have been through or felt is something that will make anyone the wiser and also be able to identify others like you when you feel like the last one of your kind left....

  • @anarion508

Just type in "the well below the valley". There is a version by The Corries, I think, as well as one by Christy Moore (my personal favourite out of all of them). Check them all out, they really are all good.

  • i just read at the comments that there are various versions of this song because it is a classic folk song can someone tell me there names or how to find them since hearing this it made me most intrigue.thx.(sorry about my bad english, i wish they were better)

  • There's a Scottish version called 'Maid of Coldingham' doesn't mention incest but seven buried children... in the end she will be 'seven years a sacran bell

An' ither seven the cook in hell'

  • @giausjulius4 haha your analogy of the mind and the parachute hits the nail on the head, i'm going to remember that :D

  • Oh and In several foreign variants, the palmer is in fact Jesus

  • It's an old folk song, that's the synopsis of the plot lol.
