Using bark is not a bad idea or mulch because it helps keep weeds down and retains moisture through the winter.

Roses will eventually get diseases, and I don't mean once, I mean each year! Even the best gardens get roses issues. Be proactive.

The best way to prevent most of the common diseases and blights is copper spray. Its organic, its safe and it works very well. Furthermore copper spray is not pricey, and one spray bottle can last all season, or more depending on the number of roses you have. But even better, copper spray is a product that can be used on all your vegetables, flowering plants, everything. Its totally safe and cheap.

Adding top dressing, or basically just organic material, such as bagged soil, compost, ect is important because your soil is alive, the organisms in your soil will use up nutrients in your soil. If your soil is between 55-80 degrees your soil is very active and the living things in the soil are eating what your plant eats. So ad nutrient rich soil every year to your roses.

Ad organic fertilizer or slow release fertilizer. Your roses will look wonderful for it. Adding organic material or slow release fertilizer is essential if you want an impressive garden.

If you feed your soil, then your soil will feed your plant.
