A quick way for me to keep track of where I am up to with sanding a wall area, is to make 2 marks 3 foot apart, using the rubber on the sander cable. Working right to left, I methodically sand out the area between the marks, and take out the right hand mark as I go. When I have completed that "grid square" I make another mark 3 foot along. Rinse and repeat. If I have to stop, or I daydream and lose track, I can see at least one mark to get me back on track.

Another way is to mark out a grid with chalk and sand each square, sanding out the chalk marks as you complete a square.A piece of chalk seems to me to be one piece of kit too many.
