@ryotaryuu - also, as long as they consider someone competent, it's up to that person to make the decision - this woman is an example of that - she had to be scared enough to stop; they still would have asked a family member if she wasn't, power of attorney or not. Doctors simply don't have the right to override a family member.

@ryotaryuu What's stupid about it? They are doping my mother and I can't do anything about it because someone else has the MPA. If none of us did any one of the family members could help her. BTW, I would have an advance directive so they'd know I didn't want their dope.

@rusureuwant2know What if you are not capable of making rational decisions, or are unconscious? Keep your supid comments to yourself.

I have just had my 5th 'ECT' session in 2 weeks. I'll probably do one more session before stopping. While I haven't seen any improvement, I haven't had any side effects other than muscle. The only people with this memory problems I have seen are the old bitties who were f'ed from the beginning.

Good grief. This is one of the best discussions on ECT that I've heard. Thank you so much for sharing your story, it's heartbreaking what you've been through. Bless you, please keep hanging in there and work hard to get your mental capacity back. You're still, obviously a well spoken, intelligent, educated, in touch woman. You're gonna be ok:)

I know depression can lead to suicide attempts, and something HAS to be done about that, talk therapy doesn't always work, in extreme cases. ECT is high voltage, inducing convulsions, this is not the answer, too many people end up disabled after the ECT many permanently. There has to be a non invasive treatment, in the future, but we need it now, I know TMS, or magnetic stimulation is being trialed on many, but it does not show much efficacy. most who did ECT, WANTED it to work.

many if not most have such severe PTSD from the ECT that they are afraid to confront or just talk to their treatment team, or ECT doctors. Doctors have such authority and pull, many former patients are afraid of forced ECT, which happens all the time still in this country. I have no personality now.

it's not informed consent the hospitals don't believe, or cover up the degree of memory loss, much is permanent, and you have to talk to the right doctors, many abhore the practice, and yes, every survivor I've talked to working at NAMI has whole years gone, look online at "should I do ECT sites?" even about.com or non agenda sites, most of the sites that do not have a bias either way, all you will see is people's lives destoryed by ECT. Most are afraid to admit such disability to their docs.
